Widely recognized as “The Miracle Bag” among farmers, Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags offer a chemical-free storage solution. These bags have an estimated useful life of three production cycles and beyond, making them a reliable and sustainable technology for secure crop storage.
Since 2014, Shayashone has been assigned by Purdue University with the mission of developing the market and supply chain for the Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags in Ethiopia. This innovative three-layer storage technology serves as a powerful shield against insect infestation, preserving grains for over two years. By reducing the flow of oxygen essential for the existence and reproduction of insects, the PICS bags provide a safe, user-friendly, and chemical-free storage solution, particularly affordable for smallholders. This approach also eliminates the traditional need for applying insecticides to stored grains. PHK Trading PLC, the sister company of Shayashone, has been proudly engaged in the manufacturing and distribution of PICS bags, since 2015, operating under an official license from PICS Global. In partnership with development and government institutions,
Shayashone has successfully introduced PICS bags in over 10,000 villages across Ethiopia, resulting in cumulative sales of 8 million bags.
As part of our promotional campaign for PICS bags, PHK Trading PLC, has strategically deployed 16,000 minutes of ICT-aided TV and radio commercials, 1260 talk shows, and 25 TV commercials, and facilitated incoming and outgoing SMS interactions totaling close to 83,000.
The impact of our efforts is reflected in the substantial growth of annual PICS bag sales, escalating from 9,000 bags in 2014 to an impressive over 2 million bags in 2022/23. Notably, this figure represents only 1.64% of Ethiopia’s maize crop production for the same period.
