The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) ((EU – 2023/1115) was endorsed on May 31, 2023, as part of a continuous endeavor to minimize greenhouse emissions and climate change by the EU. The regulation will be effective from December 2024 and restricts the export of seven commodities to EU countries if they are produced from lands deforested after December 31, 2020.
Ethiopia is one of the trade partners of the EU affected by this restriction, particularly on the export of coffee, which shares nearly one-third of the national export and supports about a quarter of the total population. Importing EU countries will also be affected by the absence of proximate quality coffee from Ethiopia. The objective of this assignment is to assess the level of awareness about the regulation and readiness at all levels to comply, identify possible impacts on and responses of stakeholders, and draw possible recommendations.
